Gharanas are best described as schools of thought/learning, or lineages of traditional Indian classical art forms, which vary according to the art form itself, its past exponents, and their particular techniques of playing. As a result of this, the process of learning Indian classical art forms can be traced back similarly to a family tree, with one's teacher, their teachers and so on, which reveals the influences on their playing and sometimes, the region that the art form began.

There are many gharanas within each art form - at SAA-uk we have a host of Artists and Tutors that hail from gharanas across India:

Literally meaning ‘to come home', gharanas are thought of as functioning similarly to families, as anyone that learns Indian classical music is automatically linked to a gharana and therefore family of techniques and approaches to their art.
