University Placements
As part of our commitment to facilitate opportunities for young people to gain invaluable experience within the arts and culture sector, we have created opportunities for students to join us during their university placements. Take a look at what they had to say about their experience at SAA-uk.
Daisy Wright
My name is Daisy Wright, and I am studying Ethics, Philosophy, and Religious Studies at the University of Leeds.
My course focuses on the differences that exist in this world, and how we can combat the challenges that come with disagreement. Whether that be opinions, faiths or cultures, there exists a certain divide in society which is often hard to overcome. Studying at the University of Leeds has opened my eyes to understanding the importance of respect and integrity when discussing diverging opinions; ultimately, everyone's opinion matters.
Specific to this placement, I undertook writing an 8000-word report based on the similarities that can be found within religions. Finding commonalities between groups can enhance community cohesion, having peripheral benefits for all of society.
Despite their doctrinal disparities, one common ground among religions is their embrace of artistic expression. Music and art serve as vehicles for devotion, worship, and transcendence across diverse faith traditions. Yet, scholarly debates often overlook the significance of this connection between music and religion. My intent in selecting this placement was to delve into this realm, uncovering the truths obscured by misconceptions and scholarly oversights.
Religion, as a facet of human experience, is deeply ingrained and enduring, despite the apparent decline of organised religion in the UK's public sphere. The recognition of shared cultural and religious elements served as the cornerstone of my motivation in this placement and for my studies. By highlighting shared values like music, we can bridge divides and foster a more harmonious world.
Karishma Phandey
I am Karishma Phandey, a BA Philosophy, Psychology, and Scientific Thought student from the University of Leeds. My final project is based on the relationship between aesthetic experience and South Asian Art through mediums such as dance and music.
Working at South Asian Arts UK was an incredible experience. I learned how a passionate team of majority women can curate an inclusive and empowering space in the Leeds creative industry.
While working as their Assistant producer, I observed the intricacies of their academic and events. Through their meticulous consideration of artistic directions, SAA-uk creates poignant and educational art pieces thus, fulfilling their mission to commemorate South Asian Art for all generations.
It was a privilege to see intimately how a charity-based organisation can use the aesthetic purpose of dance and music to commemorate South Asian cultural history.
