Vasant Panchami

Also called Basant Panchami, Vasant Panchami literally translates to ‘The Fifth Day of Spring', and is marked on the fifth day of the Indian calendar month of ‘Magha'. Vasant Panchami is an exciting celebration for Sikhs and Hindus especially due to the connotations of the beginning of Spring, and the coming of the Holi festival approximately a month later.

The focus on spring and new beginnings mean that bright yellow is a customary colour to wear on the occasion, with some suggesting that it evokes imagery of the mustard fields, while others wear it as it is believed to be Goddess Saraswati's favourite colour. The festival holds a strong association with Goddess Saraswati, the Hindu deity of wisdom, learning and the arts, which is why a popular practice during this festival is to hold a pūja, (or a worship ritual) honouring Goddess Saraswati; because of this, the festival can sometimes be simply referred to as ‘Saraswati Pūja'. Moreover, this festival and its connection with Goddess Saraswati is considered an auspicious occasion to initiate a student into education.
