Vaisakhi

Vaisakhi is a festival celebrated by Sikhs that marks both the first harvest of the year, and also the creation of the Khalsa - a special group of initiated Sikhs created in 1699 by Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th Sikh Guru. The initiation of Guru Gobind Singh's disciples into this fleet of soldier-saints dedicated to protecting the helpless and fighting against injustice makes this a very significant celebration for Sikhs around the world.

Vaisakhi is celebrated by prayers in the Gurdwara, the Sikh place of worship (translating to 'the door to the Guru') and chanting/singing prayers during processions within local neighbourhoods. Moreover, Gurdwaras are specially decorated in lights and flowers, community fairs are held, for which attendees dress in their finest clothes, socialise and share food.
