Ghatam

The ghatam is a percussion instrument used in the Carnatic music of South India. Essentially it is an earthenware pot, where the artist would use their fingers, thumbs, palms and the heels of their hands to strike it's outer surface. The sound emitting from the instrument is an airy low-pitched base sound. Sometimes the artist presses the mouth of the pot against their bare stomach, this causes the sound of the pot to deepen. Although the ghatam is the same shape as an ordinary Indian domestic clay pot, it is made specifically to be played as an instrument.
