Guru Gobind Singh Gurpurab

Guru Gobind Singh Gurpurab (also known as Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti) is a festival celebrating the birth of the 10th Guru of the Sikh faith, Guru Gobind Singh.

Guru Gobind Singh is revered as a saint, warrior, musician and poet. As a result of his father, Guru Tegh Bahadur, being martyred for refusing to give up his faith, he created a community of soldier-Sikhs known as the ‘Khalsa' who would defend the weak, protect the helpless and uphold justice at all costs.

Guru Gobind Singh is also famed for his baptism of the Panj Pyare (the Five Beloved Ones), who were the first of the Khalsa, and the first Sikhs who were given the responsibility of the 5 Ks of the Sikh faith: Kesh (long hair); Kangha (a ceremonial comb); Kaccha (cotton undergarments); Kara (a steel bangle) and Kirpan (a ceremonial steel sword).

Guru Gobind Singh is also associated with the bowed taus and dilruba instruments, both as a player and connoisseur of music.
