Lohri

Lohri is a Punjabi festival that celebrates the harvest and emerging from the winter to longer, warmer days.

The festival primarily celebrates good luck and fertility; for this reason, it is an important celebration in terms of fruitful crops, and also a special occasion for a family with a new bride or new-born baby. Traditional Lohri celebrations include bonfires, sharing food and Punjabi folk singing and dancing. Offerings of small food items such as peanuts are usually made into the fire for a fruitful harvest, and small grains such as sesame seeds, gur (jaggery), and seeds are eaten.

Popular stories that are told during Lohri often revolve around the brave and rebellious Dulla Bhatti, who is regarded as a hero and features in many traditional Lohri songs sung around the fire. Bhangra and the speech-singing art of Giddha Boliyan also plays an important part in Lohri celebrations.
