Krishna

Lord Krishna is a famous Hindu deity identified within the ancient Mahabharata epic and Bhagavad Gita text. Krishna is popularly depicted as a young male with blue skin, a crown with a peacock feather, playing a flute and around milkmaids. He is worshipped by most Hindus, and like Shiva, has a separate, distinct following that are dedicated to him, such as the Hare Krishnas.

Lord Krishna is worshipped differently by many as some connect with different representations of him in various stages of his life. He is prayed to as the epitome of innocence and love as baby Krishna, adored as the nonchalant young adult teasing milkmaids and playing hypnotising flute, and revered as the all-knowing, supreme deity as the speaker of one of the oldest texts in the world, the Bhagavad Gita. For this reason, and similarly to Lord Shiva, Lord Krishna is a source of much inspiration for Indian classical dancers as there are various interpretations and lyrical compositions exploring these different facets of his life and character. He is most commonly brought to life through dance with an exploration of his eternal love story with Radha, a gopi (milkmaid).

The most important festival for Krishna devotees around the world is Janmashtami, the celebration of Krishna's birth.
