Goddess Saraswati

Goddess Saraswati is a Hindu deity and symbolises wisdom, knowledge, and is a patron of the arts, specifically music. She is pictured as having four arms, sitting on a lotus (signifying purity) and playing the ancient, gourd-shaped veena instrument. She is also sometimes shown to be holding a mala, or a string of rosary beads, symbolising the relationship between the arts, learning and knowledge as sacred. To that end, many Indian classical artists enter the stage and begin their performances by taking her name and seeking her blessings before starting.

Goddess Saraswati is invoked most popularly during Vasant Panchami, the fifth day of Spring in the Indian month of Magha; for this, many people hold 'Saraswati Pūja' and pay homage to her through worship rituals and prayers in her name.
