Ranjana Ghatak

Ranjana was born and raised in London, and started learning North Indian Singing whilst growing up in a musical household. She studied with Indian musicians in London, including Tripti Das, Manisha Smith, Nitai Dasgupta, Gauri Bapat (Bharitya Vidya Bhavan) and Fida Hussain Khan. After hearing her favourite vocalist - Padmabhushan Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty perform in London as a teenager, she decided to pursue her passion and learning for singing by going to train in Shrutinandan, Ajoyji's singing school in Kolkata. Since then she has continued to study and visit the school and has taken part in a teacher training course in Leeds run by Ajoyji that was based on his key approaches to teaching Indian Vocal music.

Since 2014 Ranjana has been recording and performing with Liran Donin (member of Mercury Nominated band Led Bib) and Jack Ross. Performances include Kew Gardens, Saffron Walden, Bath International Music Festival, London Jazz Festival, Wigmore Hall and the trio opened for John McLaughlin and the 4th dimension at the Barbican in April 2019. Ranjana recorded a solo album with Jack and Liran titled the Butterfly Effect which was released in September 2020. In 2018 Ranjana was artist-in-residence for the Chitresh Das Institute in San Francisco, California. From the summer of 2018 Ranjana has been teaching beginners vocal at the Ali Akbar College of Music.

Ranjana has performed in education concerts at the Barbican, run singing workshops and developed a body of work with 2 bands. She toured and released her solo EP from 2011-2013. Venues included Greenbelt festival,The Vortex,Dean Clough, and Norwich Arts. She performed with Human Beamings, opening for Trilok Gurtu at the QEH & performing at Spitalfields Festival, Barbican Foyer and the Jazz Cafe. She recorded on Gareth Malone's Christmas album, alongside the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. In April of 2018 Ranjana performed alongside five singers, representing the regions of the Commonwealth in Buckingham Palace to 52 Heads of Government, HRH The Queen and the Royal Family.

She has performed as a guest singer with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Nitin Sawhney and Akram Khan's Svapnagata festival (Saddlers Wells), and Opera Shots at the Royal Opera House (Sawhney). She has toured with the Odissi Ensemble, Katie Ryan, and Parbati Chaudhury performing contemporary and traditional music for Odissi and Kathak dance.

Composing work includes a choral piece inspired by Pandit Ravi Shankar's Opera, Sukanya - sung by BBC Singers/ROH Community Chorus and Avanti School before the opera in the Clore Ballroom, Southbank Centre in May 2017. She wrote a soundtrack for Vaiyu Naidu (Birmingham Rep) and a contemporary choral piece based on Raga music for the Commonwealth Games
