Ramana Balachandhran

Ramana Balachandhran is a vainika (veena player) in the Carnatic music tradition. His talent for music was noticed when, at a young age, he could identify ragas and point out nuances. He has been performing from the age of 12 and was awarded a direct A-grade by All India Radio after auditioning at the age of 16.

Ramana started his vocal training with his mother, Sharanya Balachandhran. He then pursued the veena under Vidushi B Nagalakshmi (granddaughter of Karaikudi Sri Subbarama Iyer) for a period of 3 years, and continues learning today under his father, Sri Balachandhran. He also trained in vocal with Sangita Kala Acharya and Smt Neela Ramgopal, and mridangam with Laya Kala Pratibha Mani and Sri Ranganatha Chakravarthy.

Ramana has performed over three hundred solo concerts on the veena in many of the leading Sabhās in and outside India. He is the youngest vainika to have performed on many of those stages. His performances include: US tour in 24 Sabhās across the country; All India Radio and Doordarshan, Bangalore; Sangeet Natak Akademi.
