What happens when one of opera's greatest masterpieces meets the rich, expressive traditions of Indian classical music?

Experience Orpheus – a spectacular reimagining of Claudio Monteverdi's baroque masterpiece by acclaimed sitarist and composer Jasdeep Singh Degun. Bringing together exceptional singers and musicians from South Asian and Western classical traditions, this award-winning production creates a thrilling musical dialogue across cultures, languages and centuries.

First presented by Opera North in 2022 to outstanding critical acclaim, Orpheus received multiple awards, including Outstanding Achievement in Opera at the UK Theatre Awards and Best Stage Production at the Asian Media Awards. This new production places the musical collaboration centre stage, celebrating the extraordinary possibilities that emerge when different musical worlds come together.

At its heart is the timeless story of Orpheus, whose music has the power to move even the gods. Through Monteverdi's beautiful score, Degun's original compositions and imaginative musical arrangements by Ashok Gupta, this retelling brings fresh perspectives and textures to a story of love, loss and the power of music.

Performed in Italian, Hindi, Urdu and other languages, with English subtitles, Orpheus is a truly immersive experience – an invitation to discover opera in a bold and unexpected new way.

This production brings together an exceptional creative team:

  • Music: Claudio Monteverdi and Jasdeep Singh Degun

  • Musical arrangements: Ashok Gupta

  • Original Italian text: Alessandro Striggio

  • Translations: Ustad Dharambir Singh MBE and Shahbaz Hussain

  • Additional translations: Chandra Chakraborty, Amarjit Dhami, Saikrishnakumar Rangachari and Deepa Nair Rasiya
