Our Bowed Academy is led by Harjodh Singh. We teach Dilruba, Sarangi and Esraj, giving students the opportunity to explore the different sounds and techniques of these traditional bowed instruments.
Students begin by developing the basic technique of playing the instrument, including bow control, note patterns and understanding the placement of notes on the fingerboard. They gradually become familiar with the instrument and are introduced to playing within the framework of Raag-based music.
As students gain confidence, they develop their understanding of melody, rhythm and phrasing, while learning how to play alongside other musicians. Students are also introduced to sangat (playing together), exploring the role of bowed instruments both as accompaniment and as solo instruments.
As they progress, students can work on more advanced Raag-based playing, compositions and performance skills, developing their technique and individual musical expression.
