Ramya Tangirala

Ramya Tangirala is a skilled musician and visual artist, based in Leeds, UK. She comes from a family of artists, including the legendary musician Sangita Kalanidhi, who is her grandfather, and Smt Sowmiya who is her mother, a well known Hindustani vocalist and visual artist in Chennai.

Ramya has performed in India and worked with various arts organisations in the UK. She has been teaching Carnatic Vocals music at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Manchester and the SAA-uk Academies for the past few years. She also accompanies Bharatanatyam recitals as a vocalist. She has trained students of wide-ranging skills. In 2009, one of Ramya's students won the annual trophy at Bhavan. Ramya's students have performed at various music festivals, appeared for music exams and taken part in competitions.

In an interview with an FM Radio station, Bolton on Gandhi Jayanti, Ramya had the opportunity to present Carnatic music and sing for the local community. Ramya is a keen painter – in oil and watercolour. She also plays the Veena, a Carnatic string instrument.

Ramya has performed as a singer at the Thyagaraja Festival, London, Sri Venkateswara Temple, Birmingham, performed for Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Manchester, with Shakthi Vrund, worked as a dance musician with Kalasangam, Bradford and Annapurna Indian Dance Company, Halifax.
