Journey to another world of love and music!
The wedding of the year is here as Orpheus, the musician of mythical power, marries graceful Eurydice. When the newlyweds' joy is shattered by the sudden death of Eurydice, our heartbroken hero sets off on a crusade to the underworld to rescue his bride, certain that his love can overcome all adversity. Can Orpheus conquer fate, or will his heart be broken for a second time?
This adventurous new production of the ancient tragedy is told through a meeting of the worlds of Indian and western baroque classical music. The bowed strings of the violin and the tar shehnai, the hammered strings of the santoor, the plucked strings of the harpsichord and sitar and the rhythms of the tabla shape a unique and beautiful musical encounter between East and West.
Music Directors Jasdeep Singh Degun and Laurence Cummings weave together their respective traditions of Indian classical and western early music, joined by an exciting cast including Ashnaa Sasikaran and Nicholas Watts.
The story begins with the wedding of Orpheus – a musician of mythical power – to Eurydice. But the celebrations are cut brutally short by Eurydice's sudden death. This is a grief too great for Orpheus to bear, and he resolves to do anything he can to return her to life.
Monteverdi is often credited with inventing opera in this experimental ‘fable in music', which both celebrates and demonstrates the transcendent power of music to touch the heart and express the deepest human emotions of love and grief.
Honouring Monteverdi's pioneering spirit, this new version of Orpheus is born of a union of uniquely talented singers and musicians from both the South Asian and western classical traditions, who invite us to join them in a thrilling reimagining of a beautiful baroque masterpiece.
