Embark on a journey through the artistry and depth of Bharatanatyam with Annapoorna Kuppuswamy, a dancer whose 30-year journey began in Leeds. In Arangetram: Reflections of a Dancer, Annapoorna shares her unique perspective on redefining the presentation and experience of this revered Indian classical dance form.
The performance begins with foundational pieces like Alarippu, showcasing precision and control, and Jathiswaram, where intricate footwork and rhythmic patterns take center stage. Shabdham follows, a narrative piece weaving the mischievous tales of Krishna through expressive storytelling. At its core lies the Varnam, the pinnacle of Bharatanatyam, combining demanding technique with deep emotional resonance.
The second half captivates with expressive Padams, unfolding tales of devotion, love, and longing, often centering on Krishna and other mythological figures. The performance concludes with the exuberant Thillana, a celebratory explosion of rhythm and movement that embodies the joy of the dancer's journey.
Annapoorna's reflections extend beyond the stage. This performance represents a lifelong evolution—not just in dance but in voice, rhythm, and choreography. It is a testament to cultural depth, personal growth, and innovation. Through initiatives like the Arangetram Project, SAA-uk continues to uphold and honor this cherished tradition, nurturing dancers as they connect the past with the present.
Join us for this celebration of artistry, tradition, and transformation, where the timeless beauty of Bharatanatyam inspires both performers and audiences alike.
