Events - Dance with a Demon - Leeds Light Night 2012

Once again SAA-uk joined forces with local artists, businesses and communities to bring you Light Night; a spectacular celebration of creativity in Leeds, this time exploring the theme ‘Dead of Night’.

SAA-uk Chief Executive (Visual Artist and Fashion Designer), Dilrani Kaur  (Visual and Media Artist) and Volunteer Mrs Avtar Lall worked with the Namaste older people’s group at the Hindu Mandhir Leeds 6 to create a papier-mache sculpture  of Ravana.  The team spent several weeks working with members of a local South Asian elders group to create a 7ft paper mache Ravana - a 10 headed Demon of Hindu mythology. Some believe the ten heads represent violence and antagonism, whilst others believe they represent knowledge and emotion. Hundreds of people enjoyed a Garba dance workshop that circled the demon, before later joining in with some lively Bhangra and indulging in a bit of Henna...

A great event that celebrates the rich Arts and Cultures of Leeds’ diverse communities!
