Keertan's interest in music began at the age of four when she was first introduced to the harmonium and began learning Gurbani Kirtan from Dharambir Ji and Gunwant Kaur at the Sikh Centre in Leeds. From that she quickly developed and took part in several group and individual performances and competitions.
By the age of eight, Keertan became familiar with and took a real interest in North Indian classical music and under vocal training from the late Jayasree Sen Gupta. With family support and Jayasree’s support, she was able to advance and develop my musicianship. She has performed numerous times on behalf of SAA-UK.
Keertan has also attended South Asian Music residencies and Retreats organised by SAA-uk and attended Saturday Music School run through Leeds College of Music. Keertan learnt traditional classical Gurbani Kirtan from Ustad Harbhajan Singh Ji and classical compositions and bhajans from Jayasree Sen Gupta and had the pleasure of performing with both of them on several occasions.
As well as individual and ensemble performances, Keertan has worked with SAA-UK on Indian Summer Schools and have been teaching Indian classical music with the Swara Sangeet organisation in Leeds. In 2011, she had the privilege to further develop and enhance my musicianship under the tutelage of the legendary Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty Ji, Kaushiki Chakraborty Ji and Parthasarathi Ji.
A concert held in memory of Jayasree Sengupta, a young inspiring Indian Classical musician who sadly passed on 11th April 2010. Keertan singing a bhajan in her memory.
